Tyler + Alyssa | February 16, 2019

These two! Ah!

The cutest.

I shot a wedding two years ago almost to the day and we had a 69 DEGREE DAY. 69 DEGREES. IN FEBRUARY. Needless to say we did not get that lucky this time! <3 But, when you’re planning a winter wedding, winter is what South Dakota will likely give you.

They put together an A-list crew to make their day perfect! And, perfect it was. They opted for a small bridal party, which kept the day carefree and easy. Alyssa’s geometric-detail on her dress was to die for and the red pumps gave some sass to the easiest—seriously, easiest—going bride I have ever met. I loved all of the classic touches, the greenery, the barn, the party. It truly was a beautiful day.

I am so thankful for these two for choosing me to spend the day with them and their beautiful families + friends!

Jared + Kylee | February 9, 2019

Jared + Kylee | February 9, 2019

Well, it’s still winter! With a blizzard just days prior to Jared + Kylee’s big day, I was a little nervous…BUT midwest weather always seems to come through for my couples! While a bit cold, the clouds cleared and the sun came through for this beautiful wedding in Pipestone, Minnesota.

These two are the sweetest and their intimate ceremony reflected everything about them that I admire. It was simple, relaxed and full of genuine connection. They took the time to greet as many of their guests individually over focusing only on a schedule, and I loved capturing those candid interactions.

I also got a really good laugh out of Kylee’s sister introducing herself as Kylee during her maid of honor speech (haha!)

Jared + Kylee, I wish you the best of everything this life has to offer you. I am so honored you chose me to spend the day with you!

Why hire a birth photographer?

Lately, I’ve been craving the experience of shooting another birth. Truth be told, if I had to pick two areas to photograph for the rest of my life, I’d choose weddings + births. Can you imagine the amount of pure love I get to experience on a frequent basis? It is so, so special. Because of my demanding wedding schedule I do limit the amount of births I am able to take every year, but I love love love when I’m able to do them.

So, I thought I’d give all the reasons why I think it’s important to have an experienced photographer in your loving, sacred space as you bring new life into the world.

  1. You’re freaking having a baby!
What! This is so exciting! But with all of that excitement + anticipation comes work. You need your support people to be there to support you when you need it—not to worry about fumbling around with the iPhone. Not to mention, lighting in a birthing room can be super tricky, and I can handle that! Allowing you and your supports to be in the moment to fully experience one of the best times in your life is ultimately the best reason to hire a birth photographer.

  2. It all goes so fast.

Now, this is coming from someone who endured 28 and 24 hour labors. But, coming from a mom myself, I know how fast it all seems to go. I look at the births I am a part of and think “I don’t remember any of that during my own”. Mom is often focused inward during birth, controlling emotions, breathing and listening to her body. I buzz around in the background, capturing all of those glances, tears, tiny toes and cries so you never forget.

  3. It’s not just a luxury.

I know this is a relatively new area of professional photography and to many is considered a luxury. I know it’s not cheap. I also know it’s worth it. Keep in mind, I am all in once I get to the hospital — whether you have the baby two hours later or 14 hours later, I’m there. The memories I am able to capture will not be ones you throw in an album and never revisit. As a mother, those moments are ones you will want to revisit as often as possible, and that is absolutely worth the investment.

  4. It’s not as scary as it sounds!
The birthing room is a sacred space and the mood, vibe and emotions in that room need to be just right. I get that. I also know this is a very private time for a woman and her partner. I assure you, I am a professional. I will respect your modesty at all times and, having shot in both major hospitals in Sioux Falls, am familiar with the rules the doctors have so I am in compliance while shooting. Prior to shooting your birth story, we discuss in detail what your vision and needs are for your birth story.

I received my wedding photos, now what?

Friends! It’s time to chat about a side of wedding photography that is ironically totally sexy to me — file storage and photo printing.

HA! Bet you didn’t expect that.

So imagine — you’ve received your wedding package in the mail with a fancy USB containing a beautifully curated selection of images telling the story of your big day. You look through them, ooh, ahh, upload your favorites to facebook annnnddddd….throw it in a drawer.

Listen, I get it it! I have two kids, two chihuahuas and one husband whose needs rival those of my toddlers. Life is busy! Who has time to research file backup options or find a reputable printer?

Weihe-192.jpg

However, this is NECESSARY. You spent all of your time, energy and money to plan this special day. Why not protect the memories? Imagine plugging in your USB 6 years from now for a walk down memory lane or to find that snapshot of grandma, and your USB has somehow been damaged or corrupted. How frustrating! Unfortunately, technology is not always the most reliable.

In this case, you can be rest assured I have backups of all weddings I’ve ever shot for at least a few years. However, my backups can always glitch too. Side note—if you have a current gallery I’m working on, I have backups on backups on backups—this is for past galleries.

Here are a few of my recommendations for making sure your memories are secured for years to come!

Parmley-55.jpg

1. Print those photos!

This is an intimidating option because there are so many places to choose from for printing. I will tell you with 100% confidence, choose Mpix.com. This is the website I give my clients a print release to because they are professional, provide a superior product, and their customer service is top notch. I also feel their prices are fair.

I also now offer custom albums and canvases. A beautifully crafted album or large canvas for your wall will stand the test of time and will ensure you have a tangible record of your memories. Contact me to begin that process.

In any case, avoid non-professional printing labs such as Walmart, Walgreens, Shutterfly, etc. The quality will not match that of the photos and ultimately will be a waste of your investment in both me and the print.

Roberts-928.jpg

2. Purchase backup solutions and back.it.up.

File storage is boring, there’s no way around it. But just as we need health insurance and car insurance, you need insurance for your wedding photos. Below, I have linked to a few external hard drives on Amazon, all of which are under $100 with free Prime shipping.

With an external hard drive, it’s as simple as transferring files + storing in a fireproof safe.

Done!

Another benefit? If you have other photos that need to be backed up, you’ll have plenty of room to add those too!

Toshiba Canvio Basics Portable Drive

Seagate Portable External Hard Drive 1TB

WD 2TB Elements Portable External Hard Drive

To all of my wedding couples past + present, I adore you! Protect that investment <3

Torrey + Hannah | January 4, 2019

Torrey + Hannah | January 4, 2019

My first wedding of the year was so beautiful — a gorgeous gown with a long train, stunning veil, simple greenery + white florals—classic and just simply gorgeous. Plus, the GREEN? Can we talk about that beautiful green? And the bridesmaids skirts? Ugh. To die for.

On top of that, we lucked out like you wouldn’t believe—a beautiful 40 degree day in January AND we still had snow for photos!

Torrey is a total goofball and the way he makes Hannah laugh is so special. If I know anything, I know he will be making Hannah laugh for years to come. I loved sharing these moments with them + their loved ones.e

Here’s a few of my favorites from their big day!

Drake + Dana | December 29, 2018

Can it always snow for wedding photos from now on? I’m obsessed.

These two were surrounded by such a beautiful group of friends + family and everything came together so perfectly for their winter wedding.

While Drake + Dana’s wedding wasn’t my coldest to date (I’m looking at you, Hofer’s & Pannell’s!), it sure ranks up there! These two and their wedding party were so much fun and made freezing our buns off while taking photos totally worth it.

Here’s some of my favorites! Happy New Year!!

Zach + Tyler | December 15, 2018

If I could ever choose a wedding to shoot on my birthday, I’d choose to spend the day with Tyler and Zach all over again. I am totally oversharing alllll the dress shots and ring shots and all the things. It’s too beautiful.

Tyler + Zach are just so much fun. Tyler’s attention to detail and DIY projects for the wedding made for such a beautiful December celebration. There were tears from dad, a best man’s speech that was full of puns and dad jokes (my FAVE! Sorry Zach), a taco bar and an A-team of professional vendors who made for one hell of a party. Also, did I mention the groom’s dad dressed up as a bunny and led a dance? Because he totally did.

Tyler + Zach, thank you for choosing me, for the awesome birthday gift, and for singing happy birthday to me — you are so incredibly sweet.

Josh + Jill | October 14, 2018

Josh + Jill | October 14, 2018

A Sunday wedding at a brewery in the fall? Heck. Yes. However, we woke up to an inch or two of snow—not quite the crisp fall day we expected! Even so, it was a beautiful day despite the elements and I was stoked to shoot in snow again!

Their intimate ceremony was complete with their closest family and friends (and pup Ember!), good beer, Mexican food and a super talented jazz band.

Josh + Jill are adventurous, witty, active, and so uniquely perfect for one another it is hard to miss. Jill has a smile that warms up any room, and Josh has a way of bringing that smile out with ease. I have a camera permanently attached to my hand every time Josh sees me, so naturally I am not his favorite person (haha)! However, we survived the photos and, well….here is the proof!

Enjoy!

Eric + Samantha | October 6, 2018

Ohhh I love these two! I met Eric and Samantha last year when they were in the planning stages of their wedding, and I just knew I was going to love working with them. Fall was upon us and we enjoyed a beautiful, although cool, wedding day.

These two were surrounded by their family, friends, school friends, rugby friends, college friends…I guess I will mention they are die-hard SDSU fans, despite me being a USD alumni (gasp!)

I love every wedding I shoot for special reasons, and this one had one of the most fun bridal parties I’ve ever worked with — you can see the evidence in the laughs below! The joining of these two and their children as one family was so special and I am so happy to have been a part of it.

Eric + Sam, I wish you, Izzy + Jamison a lifetime of happiness as a family as you navigate your new marriage <3

The way Ryan & Kendra talk and laugh with one another is something I don’t see every day. From the time I met them, I knew they were a great time and that their relationship was special.

Nearly a foot of rain in the days prior cleared up just in time to give us a beautiful fall afternoon where they married in the church and spent some time outdoors with me taking some photos <3

Oh, and did I mention Kendra & her dad had a surprise choreographed dance to numerous rap hits? It was one for the books.

Enjoy! <3

Cody + Carissa | September 15, 2018

These two! Cody + Carissa first met & began falling for one another all the way back in middle school, and after 10 years of dating they made it official!

Their nuptials took place at Lake Lakodia in Madison, where they had the wholeeee place to themselves. It was a hot one for a fall day, but it was sunny & beautiful all the way around. Carissa was so incredibly detail oriented, and it shows through in the photos of all of the special touches from their day. Carissa described the style as “boho, classy, & a little campy”— and she nailed it.

Cody + Carissa, I hope you cherish these images forever and ever <3 Thank you for choosing me!

Brent + Chelsey | September 8, 2018

Brent + Chelsey | September 8, 2018

The Roberts wedding took me to Yankton, South Dakota this past weekend for a special celebration! Brent, Chelsey + their beautiful daughter sealed the deal as a family — about time, from what I heard (haha)!

Chelsey was meticulous with every detail and I am so enamored with allllll of her picks for the beautiful day. She chose a location to get ready that was full of character and natural light, and carefully planned every detail with beautiful neutral tones and love. The ceremony location was spectacular and I loved all of the beautiful light flooding in as these two made it official!

The after-party kicked off with a quick trip to the local bar down the street to watch the Huskers play, and was followed up with a special rap battle courtesy of a few bridesmaids, a choreographed dance by the couple’s nieces, and a whole lot of fun!

Brent + Chelsey, I am so thankful to have been a part of your big day. <3

P.S. This venue?! A DREAM! Highly recommend.

Andy + Jennie | August 25, 2018

I ventured West River for this beautiful Spearfish Canyon wedding a few weeks ago! Their rustic wedding was full of love, laughter & special touches to remember loved ones who weren’t able to attend. Andy has been a family friend of mine for years, and Jennie is the perfect complement to this crazy bunch!

Their outdoor ceremony was set on the beautiful hotel grounds, and the canyon and waterfalls made the perfect backdrop for their formal photos.

Max + Jessica | June 16, 2018

I am finally going to be trying to blog all of my weddings -- they may be rough and out of order, but bear with me!

Max & Jessica are one of the most fun, goofy, enthusiastically in love couples I have ever had the privilege of working with. Jessica was absolutely glowing and their love shined through in every moment of the day. I can't tell you how many times I noticed them looking at each other, standing back and watching the action, saying to one another "this is the best day ever".

These two are a DREAM & I wish them all the love & happiness in the world!
